Community Engagement

At Hands of Heartland, community engagement is crucial to our mission. We want to share time and resources with the communities we live and work in, offer a window into the world of what we do (and why it is important), and break down barriers to connection. In every area we serve, we are out in the community in big and small ways every day. Each region’s activities are unique but might include volunteering at The Humane Society in Grand Island, hosting a dance in Kearney, or playing bingo at a nursing home in Omaha. Community integration includes outings at places like the zoo, library, or coffee shop. It could mean taking art class or enjoying activities at a recreation center with community members. Our supported employment program is also a great way for participants to contribute their talents, enrich their communities, and learn and grow together.

Hands of Heartland is focused on building bridges, collaborating with groups and businesses, and figuring out how to work together to make our towns, cities, and states the best they can be. If a school district has a Transition Program night, we will provide the food, if a rec center needs items, we’ll donate puzzles, or if someone needs a place to host their meeting, we’ll offer our facilities. Hands of Heartland are members of the chambers of commerce in each town they serve and sponsor and support local school programs whenever possible. We want to be part of the fabric of the communities we care about.
